My personal skincare routine

Good skin is the basis of great makeup, and in my experience an effective skincare routine is the basis of creating good skin. Over the last few years I have established a skincare routine that works very well for me, and today I wanted to share it with you.

I have what I would describe as “problematic” skin. I have a fairly normal oil-flow, however my skin is very sensitive, reactive and prone to dehydration. I also have an eye condition that means my eyes are hyper sensitive, and react badly to a gamut of products for a number of reasons. Over the years I have honed the products I use to a carefully edited selection, and I rarely, if ever, waver from my routine.

Makeup Removal / Pre-cleansing:

1 Dermalogica PreCleanse

For my pre-cleansing / makeup removing needs I use Dermalogica PreCleanse. It’s an oil-based, water soluble product that breaks down virtually any makeup no matter how waterproof. I apply this to DRY skin, and use the application time to give myself a facial massage. It does a great job at not only removing my makeup, but also seems to break down any oil / dead skin that has accumulated in my pores.

2 Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel leaves my face feeling thoroughly clean, but not stripped or tight. I create a very wet lather in my hands, rub it into my face and give it a once over with a muslin cloth, then rinse under the shower.

DCF 1.0
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant leaves my skin clear and baby soft, every time I use it. In Summer, I use it every second day, but come Winter, it’s an every day necessity. The only thing I dislike about this is the fact that I can’t bring the packaging into the shower, because it’s a powder. I tip a teaspoon-full into my wet hands, rub them together to form a paste, and work it into my skin. I rinse it off under the shower.

4 Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster
Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster is my serum of choice. I apply a few drops to each cheek and my forehead and blend it out all over my face. I then add a drop under each eye and pat it in for some extra hydration to one of the dryest parts of my face.

5 Kiehls Ultra Facia Cream
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream is one of the only moisturisers I have ever really loved. It is rich and nourishing, but it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave my skin feeling clogged, heavy or oily.

Eye Cream:

I alternate between 2 different eye creams.

6 Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado
Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is my old faithful. It’s a rich, creamy and hydrating formula, which I love, and I love even more that it doesn’t irritate my extraordinarily sensitive eyes.

Available from Nordstrom

7 Renutriv Recreation Eye Cream and Serum
For a more effective, deeply nourishing and reparative eye treatment I use Estee Lauder Renutriv Recreation Eye Serum and Eye Cream. Unfortunately (I believe due to the powerful active ingredients) I am unable to use this every night without my eyes reacting. However I do use it every second night, and I feel like it makes a real difference to the condition of the delicate skin around my eyes.

Other eye creams in the Renutriv line are available from Nordstrom

8 Invisible Zinc ESP
I am a firm believer in the benefits of using a physical sunscreen instead of a chemical sunscreen. Invisible Zinc is the most easily accessible physical sunscreen on the market, and for that reason it is my sunscreen of choice.

I primarily use 2 lip balms.

9 Maybelline Baby Lips
If I am applying lip balm under lipstick, I always go for Maybelline Baby Lips. It is the most effective lip primer I have used, and it’s a bargain at less than $4.

10 Lanolips Lemonaid
If my goal is to repair and nourish chapped lips, I like to use Lanolips Lemonaid. I have had to decant this into a small pot that I keep on my desk, because the formula becomes very hard in cold weather, and I split the tube. I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away, so into the pot it went.

I hope you enjoyed that insight into my skincare routine, and that it answered any questions you may have had. I don’t really change my routine, so I won’t be incorporating skincare into the Makeup Utopia editorial schedule.

Do you use any of my skincare favourites? Which ones? What products do you like to use?
