Today for M|U loves, I’m very excited to share my interview with the wonderful Phyrra. I have been reading Phyrra’s reviews of indie makeup products for many years (well before I started this blogging gig myself), and I was over the moon when she agreed to be interviewed for Makeup Utopia. Phyrra focusses on alternative beauty, and covers only cruelty-free brands. If you don’t already follow her, what are you waiting for? You’re going to love her!
Tell me a bit about your blog?
I’m a cruelty free beauty blogger. I also cover the occasional lifestyle, alternative fashion, and pet posts. I started out reviewing indie mineral makeup and changed the focus of my blog to cruelty free beauty in 2012. So I still review and love indies, but I also cover mainstream brands too. I create makeup tutorial videos and write reviews. I’m addicted to Pinterest.
What is your favourite budget makeup brand? What is your favourite product from that brand?
My favorite budget makeup brand is either Nyx Cosmetics or Milani Cosmetics. I love Nyx mascaras and eyeshadow singles. I love Milani lipsticks and shadow eyez pencils.
What is your favourite luxe makeup brand? What is your favourite product from that brand?
My favorite luxe makeup brand is probably NARS. I love NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer and I love their blushes! It’s hard to choose just one thing! I also love their matte lip pencils.
My favorite department store brand is Urban Decay, though I love Too Faced too. I can’t get over how awesome UD eyeshadows are, and I love Too Faced’s eyeshadow primer to bits. Too Faced also has beautiful baked blushes and I love their new Instant Attitude Brow lift product. And I can’t forget Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics lip tars! Love those! Inglot also has great eyeshadows and their new HD illuminizing powder is fantastic.
What is your favourite indie makeup brand? What is your favourite product from that brand?
There is no way I can choose just one indie brand as my favorite! I love indies! I love Sugarpill pressed eyeshadows! I love Fyrinnae and Darling Girl as both have awesome complex colors and Pixie Epoxy & Glitter Glue (products to foil shadows without a mess). Silk Naturals makes a lot of great eyeshadow clones like the Naked 3, Naked 2, Naked 1 and Naked Basics, plus they also make pretty creme products like the recent blush, highlighter, contour trio they released. BFTE has a ton of beautiful complex eyeshadows. Virus Insanity makes great duochromes and they also have a line with beautiful holographic glitters. Morgana Cryptoria makes stunning semi-loose eyeshadows like their Dr. Who inspired Don’t Blink collection and great lipsticks. Geek Chic has a lot of gorgeous eyeshadows too. Makeup Geek has a ton of beautiful eyeshadows, many of which are cruelty free dupes for MAC colors, except they have better color payoff!
For nail polish, my favorites are Cult Nails, Literary Lacquers, KBShimmer, Pretty Serious, Girly Bits, piCture pOlish and Rainbow Honey. So many great polishes! I really love multi-chromes, iridescent, scattered holo, and complex glitters and flakies.
What’s your makeup crack? Are you a lipstick lover, a blush junkie, a mascara maven, or is it another product that floats your boat?
I’m an eyeshadow freak. I love eyeshadows! I feel like I need all the teal blues and purples that are out there!
Before I started beauty blogging I was a lipgloss freak and owned a ton of lipgloss.
So, be honest, how many eyeshadows do you own?
Easily into the hundreds or thousands. I’ve never counted! I’d be afraid to know!
Tell me your best makeup secret, tip or trick.
Always use primer – whether it’s eyeshadow or face primer! I have oily eyelids and it’s a must for keeping my eyeshadow in place all day! If you need additional help, use Skindinavia or Urban Decay’s setting spray.
If you have an interest in Indie or Cruelty Free makeup brands, or you just love a blogger with an alternative aesthetic, you’ll definitely enjoy Phyrra. Visit her website, or pick your favourite social media network and follow her there – be sure to tell her I say hi!
