The pigmentation on the SuperStay Lip Pencils is quite good as a general rule. The darker shades like Bordeaux, Cappuccino and Red provide almost fully opaque coverage. The exception to this is Brown. Aside from being more of a brick red than a true brown, it is also very sheer. The lighter shades are a mixed bag of medium to full opacity on the lips. Rosewood and Noisette are quite opaque, but Icy Beige lets any lip pigmentation/freckles show through.
As far as lip pencils go, these are not the easiest to apply. Due to the twist-up packaging, once they are blunt, they stay blunt. The texture of some of the pencils also makes them quite difficult to apply. Bordeaux was the worst in this regard. It was so dry I actually snapped the tip of the “lead”. This dryness also resulted in a rather patchy application. If you were pairing this with a lipstick, this would be less of an issue as presumably the creaminess of the lipstick would even out the patchiness.
As the name suggests, these are very long wearing. I wore the lip pencil in Red to a wedding this week. It lasted through the wedding to a reception full of greasy food before needing to be touched up. This was 6 hours after application. Without the greasy meal I would guess these would last for around 8 hours. Like many long wearing lip products, after a few hours these can start to look a little worse for wear, as they are somewhat drying and can ball up on your lips.
The packaging on these lip pencils is nothing to write home about. Just a typical twist-up lip pencil design. This sounds good in theory, but in practice I find it leads to blunt pencils and an imprecise line. My personal preference is for a pencil I can physically sharpen, to ensure the crispest lip line possible.
Random trivia: The SuperStay Lip Pencil in Red is a perfect match for MAC lipstick in Ruby Woo.
